This sample illustrates a portion of the design process in which
a conceptual plan is developed through client and designer interaction.

This client had a small side yard adjacent to another house, and apartment
buildings on the other two sides.  This space was being used for a number
of things, and that was part of the problem - yards tend to become catchalls
when they aren't focused for a particular use.

My client wanted a garden in the Japanese style for outdoor dining,
and a space to meditate, and do yoga.  She also wanted privacy
from the other house and the apartment buildings.

I generate sketches from ideas
that are developed in talking
with the client.  We also look at
pictures of many types of gardens
and landscape materials to
begin an interactive design
process
.

A plan is developed showing
spatial relationships, and specific
elements that will be a part of the
final plan.

After we've arrived at the design,
the client may wish to have technical drawings done that can be used
by a landscape contractor to construct
the garden.

Occasionally, clients choose to install
the garden themselves, and only
a few other sketches are necessary.

The beautifully Installed Garden -
a space for Calm Abiding! You'll
notice a few minor differences
between this and the sketches,
and that's because plans will
typically change a bit through the
design/build process.
